Generative Engine Optimization for Local Businesses

Customers now ask Google and AI tools who to call. If your pages give no clear answer, those tools quote someone else. I run generative engine optimization for service businesses: answer-first pages, a complete profile and checks on where you appear. Send your site and I will test a few questions.

What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization means shaping your pages so AI search tools can find, trust and quote them. It sits on top of normal SEO: crawlable pages, clear answers, honest facts and a consistent business profile. You may also hear it called answer engine optimization.

Google says there are no extra requirements for its AI features beyond sound SEO. So I start with the basics and add answer-first writing, because that is what makes a page easy to quote.

What does the work include?

Question research

I collect the questions real people ask: People Also Ask, Reddit, Quora, Search Console queries and your own enquiries. I keep the ones your business can answer truthfully and drop the rest. These become the headings on your pages, because searchers and AI tools both look for a heading that matches the question.

Answer-first pages

Each question heading is followed by a direct answer in two or three lines, then the detail. A reader gets the point fast, and a tool can quote it without rewriting. I keep sentences short and plain, so the answer reads the same when it is lifted out of the page.

FAQ blocks with real questions

Each page gets the questions customers ask, under a specific heading, with answers that match the page word for word in the schema. I never paste the same question onto several pages, so each page has its own job.

Profile and entity consistency

Your business name, address, phone number, services and links should read the same on your site, your Google Business Profile and your listings. I audit them and fix the differences. A clear, consistent business is easier for Google and for AI tools to recognise.

Original facts and sources

Pages with your own numbers, photos and process detail give a tool something it cannot copy from a competitor. I add facts from your jobs and link to official sources such as city permit offices or manufacturers. I never invent a statistic or a source.

Local detail

Neighborhoods, landmarks, local rules and the way people in your area talk about the problem all go into the page. This is what separates a page written for your town from a template with the town name swapped.

Freshness

Pages carry a visible last updated date, and I only change it when the content changes. Prices, rules and seasons move, so I set a review date for each important page.

AI visibility checks

I use the Search Console report for generative AI features, plus a fixed list of questions I ask AI tools each month. I log whether your business or pages are named and what the answer said. It shows trends, not guarantees.

Who is this for?

  • Service businesses whose customers ask questions before they call
  • Dental and medical practices with treatment pages
  • Online stores with buying guides and category pages
  • Businesses that already rank but never appear in AI answers
  • Owners who want a written record of where they are named

What can you control, and what can you not?

You control how clear your pages are, the facts on them, your profile, your reviews and your site. You do not control whether a tool names you, or how Google picks the sources behind an AI Overview. Anyone who promises a place in AI answers is guessing.

What I can do is remove the reasons a tool would skip you, and then measure what changes.

What usually goes wrong?

  • Pages with no direct answer near the top
  • Text written by an AI tool with no real detail from the business
  • FAQ schema that does not match the visible page
  • The same FAQ pasted onto many pages
  • No sources and no last updated date

How does an AI search project run?

  1. Baseline

I record your current Search Console data and test a fixed set of questions, so we can compare later.

  2. Research the questions

I collect real questions from search, forums and your enquiries, and keep the ones you can answer.

  3. Rewrite the pages

I add question headings and direct answers, with facts, sources and local detail.

  4. Fix the profile

I make your business details match across your site, profile and listings.

  5. Add matching schema

I add structured data that matches the visible text, then test it before launch.

  6. Track each month

I check the Search Console report and the question set, and send a plain summary.

Can you guarantee my business shows in AI Overviews?

No. Google says there are no special requirements beyond good SEO, and nobody controls which sources a tool picks. I improve the pages and profile, then report what changed in your numbers.

How do I see if I appear in Google AI features?

Search Console has a Generative AI features report, in beta at the time of writing. It shows how often your pages appear in these features. I also test a fixed list of questions each month and record the answers.

How does AI search fit with local SEO and ads?

AI answers still draw on pages that rank and on profiles Google trusts. So the profile work in local SEO and the page work here support each other.

Ads give quick data on which questions turn into calls. I use that to decide which pages to write first.

This work is part of what I do as an AI search specialist for US businesses, so pages, profile and ads stay in step.

Is this different from normal SEO?

It builds on it. The same basics apply: pages Google can crawl, helpful content and a clear business profile. The extra work is in how pages are written, so answers are easy to find and quote.

Which AI tools do you check?

I check Google AI features through Search Console, and I test questions in the main AI assistants I can access. I tell you which ones I used each month.

Do I need new pages for this?

Often I rewrite or extend the pages you already have. New pages are only worth it when a question you can answer has no page yet.

How long until I see AI impressions?

It varies. On one client site, the Search Console AI features report showed near zero for the first weeks, then climbed. I cannot promise a date.

Do you write the pages with AI?

I use AI tools for research and drafts, and I check every page by hand against a strict writing list. Pages need real facts that AI tools do not have, so I ask you for them.
